3. Purchase backup presents
The financial forecast for the major retailers this holiday season shares that shoppers are purchasing extra items this year just in case something fails to arrive in time for Christmas. No one wants a disappointed child Christmas morning. It never hurts to think ahead using creative problem-solving for worst-case scenarios such as this. As long as the item can be returned (always check the store’s policy) or you might decide to keep it for gifts throughout the year such as birthdays, showers, weddings, anniversaries, work-related events, or hostess gifts. I have seen that some retailers have extended their return-by dates until the end of January which is quite convenient. I, myself, have rarely had a problem returning a gift in January as long as I explained that it was a gift. (Without a receipt, one most likely will receive store credit.) Worse comes to worst, any extra gifts that you find yourself with, you can choose to sell the item on Craigslist, Facebook Marketplace, Ebay, Etsy, Mercari, or any other reseller site.
4. Journal Your Worries Away
If you find yourself lying awake at night ruminating on your gift-giving woes, take five minutes to write out your thoughts, releasing them to paper. Don’t allow these worries to rent space for free in your head. You can either shred what you wrote or return to it after Christmas to expand on how you survived and endured!
5. Reflect on past wins
Reflect on a time when you were faced with a similar obstacle in the past, and how you overcame the obstacle with success. Barring children who haven’t developed a filter in telling others that this gift isn’t what they wanted, remember that the gift recipient most likely cares for you a great deal. Most people are quite gracious no matter what gift they receive. And if you have an ornery person on your hands, then remember that is who the person is, and not a reflection of you. What’s important to the majority of people is creating memories by sharing time together, sharing laughter, and love. Relax in knowing that your actions of kindness and holiday spirit will be appreciated. Truly it is the thought that counts in the long run.
6. Spend within in your means
MagnifyMoney reports that an average consumer charged $1,381 on their credit cards during the holiday season in 2020. It’s a well-kept secret that the way that the rich stay rich is to only pay cash and be frugal in what they spend, among other things. No right-minded person wants you to end up in the poorhouse, as my mother used to say, over a mere Christmas present. Chances are that you are aware of how much extra money you have for Christmas, or saved especially for the holidays. Stick within your guidelines by planning all your gifts before making any purchases. Letting go of perfectionism is a great method for keeping to your budget, not worrying whether you have the most impressive gift to offer. Choose instead to strive for excellence in holiday spirit!
